Home Boiler Replacement

Boiler replacement in Acalanes Ridge, CA built around your radiators and piping

A new boiler is only as good as the heat loss calculation, piping and controls behind it. We plan all three so the system runs efficiently and heats evenly for years.

  • Sized by heat loss, not the old nameplate
  • Outdoor reset controls configured
  • System flushing and protection

Choosing and installing the right boiler

Many existing boilers are larger than the homes they heat. Original equipment may have been sized generously, and insulation or window upgrades since then have reduced heat loss further. Replacing a boiler based on the old nameplate carries that oversizing forward. We calculate your home heat loss and compare it with the heat your radiators or baseboard can deliver, which gives a far better basis for sizing.

For hot water systems, the main choice is between a conventional boiler and a condensing boiler. Condensing boilers, often called mod-cons because they modulate their firing rate, recover additional heat from exhaust gases. They achieve their highest efficiency when water returning from the radiators is cool enough for condensation to occur. That is where outdoor reset control matters: it adjusts water temperature based on the weather, running cooler in mild conditions and hotter only when needed.

Outdoor reset control is what lets a condensing boiler live up to its efficiency rating. We set the curve to match your home.

Whether a condensing boiler fits well depends on your heat emitters. Radiant floors and generously sized cast iron radiators work well at lower water temperatures. Small baseboard systems may need higher temperatures, which reduces condensing benefit. We evaluate your emitters and explain realistic performance rather than quoting the best case.

Near-boiler piping is where many installations succeed or fail. Modern boilers often require hydraulic separation, such as primary and secondary piping or a low loss header, so the boiler and heating circuits each get the flow they need. We also plan for air elimination, expansion tank sizing and a dirt separator, often magnetic, to protect the new heat exchanger from sludge carried over from old piping.

Venting and drainage are different for condensing boilers. They typically vent through approved plastic or stainless materials and produce acidic condensate that should pass through a neutralizer before draining. If the old boiler vented into a chimney shared with other appliances, we review how those appliances will vent once the boiler is disconnected.

Steam systems are a separate case. Steam boilers are sized to the connected radiation rather than heat loss alone, and piping near the boiler must follow manufacturer requirements closely. Converting steam to hot water is rarely simple, so most steam homes replace with a new steam boiler. For homes that also want domestic hot water from the boiler, combination units or indirect water heaters can be considered.

Before starting up a new hot water boiler, we flush the system and add appropriate treatment where recommended. Commissioning includes combustion analysis, setting the outdoor reset curve and verifying heat delivery. If repair might still be an option for your current equipment, compare with our Boiler Repair page before deciding.

Signs a boiler is due for replacement

These conditions suggest it is time to plan for a new boiler rather than wait for a mid-winter failure.

Leaking heat exchanger or sections

Leaks inside the boiler itself are rarely worth repairing.

Repeated service calls

Frequent breakdowns on aging equipment add cost and risk.

High fuel use

Older boilers are often much less efficient than modern equipment.

Uneven heat throughout the home

Replacement is a chance to correct piping and control issues.

Parts becoming hard to find

Obsolete components can turn a simple repair into a long wait.

Soot, odors or combustion concerns

These need prompt evaluation and may point to replacement.

From assessment to a new boiler running smoothly

Every step is designed to match the boiler to your home and protect it for the long term.

  1. Heat loss and emitter review

We calculate heat loss and evaluate radiators, baseboard or radiant loops.

  2. System and piping evaluation

Existing piping, zoning, venting, expansion and water quality are inspected.

  3. Equipment proposal

Written options compare condensing and conventional boilers, controls and domestic hot water choices.

  4. Installation

The old boiler is removed and the new one piped with proper separation, venting and condensate handling.

  5. Flush, fill and commission

The system is cleaned and treated, then combustion, reset curve and heat delivery are verified.

What shapes a boiler replacement

Several factors decide how involved your project will be.

Primary variables for boiler replacement
Boiler typeCondensing boilers cost more upfront and need specific venting and condensate handling.
Steam or hot waterSteam boiler replacement follows different sizing and piping rules.
Near-boiler pipingHydraulic separation, air elimination and dirt separation add components and labor.
Domestic hot waterCombination boilers or indirect water heaters change equipment and piping.
Venting and chimney workNew vent routes or relining for other appliances may be required.

Boiler replacement questions

A condensing boiler captures extra heat from exhaust gases, producing condensate in the process. It is most efficient when return water temperatures are low enough for condensation to occur.

Often yes, especially with larger radiators or radiant floors. We evaluate your emitters to estimate how often the boiler will operate in condensing mode.

It is possible but usually involves significant piping and radiator changes. Most steam systems are replaced with a new steam boiler.

Older systems carry sludge and debris that can damage modern heat exchangers. Flushing and a dirt separator help protect the new equipment.

Yes, through a combination boiler or an indirect water heater connected to the boiler. We compare both approaches in the proposal.

Homeowners on their new boilers

They sized our new boiler from a heat loss calculation, and it turned out to be much smaller than the old one. The house is more comfortable than ever.

The outdoor reset setup made a real difference. The radiators stay gently warm instead of cycling between hot and cold.
